ESOS – A load of hot air?

Government has established ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) to implement the EU Energy Efficiency Directive all aimed at reducing carbon emissions and combating global warming.

Conducting an ESOS energy assessment audit every 4 years is mandatory for organisations in the UK that meet the qualification criteria. You wouldn’t immediately think that eXPD8 would be the kind of company that the scheme was intending to target, but by virtue of the sheer scale of eXPD8’s employed national workforce, an audit was required.

eXPD8 engaged GreenRock Energy, a firm specialising in energy management to conduct the work. The great benefit the audit afforded were the skills, experience and advice that GreenRock brought, but also an opportunity for senior management to stop and reflect on all the things that the company does which impacts on the environment.  GreenRock were particularly impressed by the Samsung Tablet network that allows briefs, planograms etc. to be disseminated, and data collected from the field without environmentally unfriendly photocopying or postal services.

The company’s biggest area of energy consumption is the fuel consumed in travelling to calls.  However, eXPD8’s position as having the UK’s largest integrated and employed Field Marketing resource mitigates these energy costs considerably, and the sophisticated scheduling system WIXXY in addition to ensuring that a skilled employee is scheduled to every call, serves to ensure that routing is optimised.

However, as with everything in life, there is always room for improvement.  In particular, the company has undertaken to distribute general advice to colleagues on how to minimise greenhouse gas emissions whilst driving both on behalf of the company and privately.  Of course, all information will be distributed to tablets so no environmental impact!

All in all, an excellent and very worthwhile exercise with eXPD8 now full certified by The Environment Agency for the next 4 years.
